Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista
Before the XI Century, Barbaresco already had a church which was located in an area behind the castle, a document dating back to 1014 bears witness to this fact. The present church was designed by the architect Castelli, its building started in 1728 and it was opened in 1730.
Its massive baroque structure was further decorated and enhanced over the years. In 1756 the bell tower was built and later an icon of San Giovanni Battista with a marble frame was added (1780).
The interior has a main altar made of precious marble, which was designed by Count Rangone di Montelupo, behind it there is a fresco dedicated to San Giovanni Battista (patron saint of Barbaresco), on the left there is the chapel of Madonna del Rosario, where you can admire a statue of the Madonna surrounded by smaller images which represent the Mysteries of the Rosary, while on the right there is the chapel of San Giuseppe, which houses a painting that represents the Assumption of Saint Joseph.
Furthermore, the interior preserves a choir made by the company Vittino of Centallo (year 1850) and an inlayed walnut choir of the year 1796, a baptismal font made up of polychromatic marble with a wooden sculpture by the local carver Francesco Vacca, who also made another sculpture which decorates the ambo (1992).
The interior has been recently decorated with frescos commissioned to the local artist Cavazza by the local population and the refined taste of the parish priest Don Paolo Doglio.
The Church of San Donato
The church dedicated to San Donato was finished in 1833 and was built using the bricks of the former church of San Donato, which is mentioned in the administrative document Registrum Comunis Albae (1219).
This elegant building was decorated by the painter Giuseppe Viglino (1833), in the 1970s it was sold to the Commune; following a conservative restoration the Commune decided to use it to house the Enoteca Regionale del Barbaresco.
The building was divided into four main areas: the central nave which hosts educational panels about Barbaresco and its territory, a room on the left on the ground floor for the wine exhibition, and the office of the organization on the first floor.
The space on the left is dedicated to wine tasting: here you can sample the precious wines of the Enoteca while the apse hosts a large exhibition of the most prestigious bottles.
The Land Chapels
Near the hamlet Asili you can admire the Chapel of San Teobaldo, patron saint of Alba together with San Lorenzo: this building is a symbol of the strong ties between Barbaresco and the capital of the Langhe.
The church was larger, but in the 1950s its size was reduced and some of its bricks were used to build the first church in the hamlet of Tre Stelle. The church is flanked by small flower beds and benches where you can have a rest while admiring a fascinating view over the village of Barbaresco.
The territory is rich in votive chapels, especially in the hamlets Ovello and Rabajà, a large number of shrines in honour of the Madonna which have recently been built in every hamlet of the village bear witness to the strong devotion to the Mother of Jesus in the local population.
